While Kirpalani and Sharma do not condone the inequities emerging from class relations, their critique lacks the perceptive, sharp edge of recent films tackling the same topic. Still, it oversimplifies it to settle for a liberal humanist outcome. Joining the bandwagon of the current landscape of ‘eat-the-rich’ films, Gaslight attempts a commentary on class privileges and aspirations. However, the film’s other ideological leanings struggle to conjure as much nuance. Kirpalani, who has always had feminist leanings in his projects (remember Phobia?), does enough subversion in his female archetypes even when he indulges in them. However, it is her character arc, from standard femme fatale to a paranoid Lady Macbeth, which emerges as the most convincing in the entire bunch. Chitrangda Singh’s dialogue delivery sometimes lacks the mystic demanded of her witchy character. While many films have addressed the brutality of domestic violence, including Provoked, Saat Khoon Maaf, etc., Darlings has made us all realize how gaslighting is often camouflaged under the false pretext of love claims.Sara Ali Khan is convincing as Meesha, but the film’s standout is easily Massey as Kapil-an orphan navigating class relations in a eugenics-bound society. Gaslighting being the overarching theme - after watching this movie it struck me how gaslighting isn’t just another gender neutral manipulative tactic that we talk about in relationships… (2/3) #Darlings #DarlingsReview #ViolenceAgainstWomen- Misimi August 9, 2022ĭarlings, specially the first half, is an accurate representation of trauma-bond, gaslighting and manipulation and how it makes leaving soo hard.(4/4)- Kritika August 10, 2022 I loves the whole concept of the movie, the story, the plot, the acting by all of the actors, the manipulation, the gaslighting, the pain, the badru's urge to believe that hamza will change, the 'its not alcohol it was just him'.
